About Toto
Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from the Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand all over the world.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
During the recording process of the fifth album, the group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to record a new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band released Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. This includes a cover version of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. After Isolation Toto was released, the band went on absence. The band members of the group a chance to pursue solo projects. In 1996, the group reformed for a tour and album. It was the first time in more than a decade that all the original band members were on stage.
The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time that the original members of Toto were performing together. Following this, the band disbanded once again. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to benefit the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in over 31 year that all of Toto's founding members were on stage together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Despite their fame The group faced a few setbacks in their later years. In 2002, keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes took a medical leave of absence. Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over, but the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes and a series of disappointing albums led Toto to break up for a few years. The group returned to touring in 2012 with the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.
The album was a return to their best form, and the tour that went with it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
Toto's music remains the same today as it was back in the 1970s and 80s and getting new fans with every new generation. Their success has made them a constant fixture in pop culture and their live shows are always packed with energy and excitement.
